Freshly Divided • Farm Grown • Perennial Herb
Bring a little piece of our farmstead’s herbal garden into your own with our freshly divided comfrey crowns!
Comfrey has long been treasured in traditional herbalism and homesteading for its abundant foliage, deep-reaching roots, and remarkable ability to return year after year. A beautiful, hardy perennial, comfrey makes a wonderful addition to herbal gardens, permaculture spaces, and backyard homesteads.
Our crowns are carefully divided from established plants here at The Wild Carrot Farmstead during autumn, when comfrey naturally begins directing its energy away from leafy growth and into its root system.
Each crown includes a healthy growing point and an attached root section, ready to establish itself in its new home.
Planting & Growing
● Plant Type: Hardy perennial
● Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
● Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter
● Spacing: 2–3 feet apart
● Planting Depth: Growing buds 1–2 inches beneath the soil
● Harvest: Foliage throughout the growing season once established
Autumn Planting Instructions
If you purchase a comfrey crown from us this autumn, we recommend getting it into soil promptly upon arrival!
Plant directly into your garden while the ground is still workable, or plant your crown in a container of soil, protect it from severe winter freezing, and transplant it into its permanent garden home come spring.
Your crown will arrive bare-root with foliage trimmed back for safe shipping. This is completely normal! The plant’s growing potential is tucked away in its root system, ready to emerge when conditions are favorable.
Traditional Homestead Uses
Comfrey is a beloved multipurpose plant, traditionally grown for herbal infused oils, topical preparations, compost enrichment, and use as a nutrient-rich garden mulch.
Please Note: Comfrey spreads readily from root fragments and can be difficult to remove once established. Choose your planting location carefully. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids and is not recommended for internal consumption. Avoid applying comfrey preparations to broken skin.
