A Bit of History

Decorating horse harnesses has a very long history, but the horse brasses most recognizable today became especially popular during the 19th century. Working horses could be dressed in elaborate arrangements of gleaming brass, with designs representing everything from horses and wheat to animals, trade symbols, crests, and commemorative motifs.

As working horses gradually disappeared from everyday streets and farms, the brasses themselves became beloved collectibles — little remnants of a time when the horse was woven into nearly every part of daily life.
