It’s that time of year again…

Where all the itchy things come out!

So I am staying ahead of the game and crafting this pine tar salve for my family and to keep in our apothecary.

So I thought I’d teach you along the way, as well!

Pine tar soaps and salves for poison ivy is an age-old remedy as it helps to neutralize URUSHIOL, which is the oil in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac that most people have an allergic reaction to.

In addition, pine tar has been shown to be antipruritic, anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal.

These properties make pine tar suitable for the topical treatment of eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and other dry, itchy, flaky or inflamed skin conditions!

Pine tar has a very strong scent, but is very beneficial for things like eczema, splinters, minor skin irritations, bug bites, dry skin patches, blistery rashes (like from poison ivy), and more!

Essential Oils help cut down on the tar scent a little bit, plus lend their own individual benefits to the mix. •
Don’t think you will be able to cover up the scent completely though.

But honestly, I LOVE the smell of pine tar, anyways, so this is not a big deal for us.

The reason I went with the essential oils I did for this specific recipe is because Tea Tree oil is anti-bacterial/fungal/infectious/inflammatory/septic, Orange oil helps repair tissue and dermatitis, and Cedarwood oil is all around amazing in helping psoriasis and skin diseases.

And then what’s neem oil used for in this recipe?

Neem is able to balance oil production, heal wounds, stimulate collagen formation, reduce post-acne scars and minimize skin inflammation.

So it was only natural these skincare powerhouse oils were selected.

I hope this gives you another tool to use to care for your family this summer!
